Early Morning Wake Up Call

I nearly didn’t get out bed this morning. But I did!

I have been successfully getting up at 6:00 a.m. for the past week. Last week I set a goal to get up early, to have quiet time to prepare for my day. An idea I learned about from Hal Elrod and his book The Miracle Morning.

When my alarm sounded, there was a moment of desire to press my brain’s snooze button. But I didn’t!

As my alarm chirped beside my head, my brain was begging to go back to my dream. “Why did I set that alarm anyway? I’m so tired. I went to bed too late and I haven’t gotten enough sleep.”

I listened to the chatter for a moment or two. Then the voice of reason jumped in to settle things down.

“I set the alarm because I have a goal of getting up early and starting my day with productivity. I felt good when I have done it in the past. What am I waiting for. I’ll be disappointed with myself if I go back to sleep.”

Well darn! My brain had me there… Yes, I enjoy the feeling of being productive in the morning. Yes, I have goals that I plan on achieving.

Okay… I’m up!

Thanks to mentors like Hal Elrod and Mel Robbins, these decisions are getting easier every day. I learned about Mels’ 5-second rule from a friend a few weeks ago and I have changed many behaviors using her technique during that short period of time.

5–4–3–2–1, jump out of bed. 5–4–3–2–1, put on my running gear and head out the door. 5–4–3–2–1, write a blog post about the idea that just popped into my head.

One of the most important things I have learned is when you have an idea, you have to act on it immediately. If you hesitate, the idea and desire to act on it pass and the opportunity is gone.

Picture yourself standing at the bottom of an escalator. The steps continually moving forward. If you hesitate and don’t take a step forward, that step keeps going up and then it’s gone. It’s moved forward without you!

Imagine the inventions that would change our world if their creators decided to stay in bed and ignore the pull towards something greater.

There are many things I’ve had ideas for yet hesitated. There are many things that I’ve acted on. Which things do you think I was successful at achieving?? (Yes, this is a rhetorical question)

Through my day, I have ideas for topics pop up in my mind continually. If I don’t write them down, they fade into the oblivion. Sometimes they return, sometimes they don’t.

Acting on thoughts comes in handy when I’m practicing my violin. I’m just learning to play and I still have to tell myself “I should go practice”. If I chose ignore the thought, I struggle to find time to practice. Without practice I will never improve.

Life will always move forward with or without you. YOU decide if you want to go along for the ride or not.

The habits of acting and procrastination are created in childhood. I’ve seen it with my two kids. If I’ve asked them to do something, like take their dishes to the kitchen. If they don’t act right away, chances are they will forget to do it. Then either I do it later or they get pulled from their warm cozy beds to finish the job. It may seem mean but I’m responsible for teaching them skills they will need to be successful in life. It’s pure luck that I get some enjoyment out of it. :)

So I leave you with this life lesson. Ideas come to everyone, at all times of the day. The trick is listening to your inner voice and acting on the ideas. Hesitation and procrastination are the death of success and creativity. You won’t act on ALL of the ideas but the more you practice listening and acting on the important ideas, the more successful you will be.
